Revenue Of MSC Malaysia Companies Up RM17 Billion In 2007, Says Abdullah
PUTRAJAYA, Sept 11 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is pleased with the progress of MSC Malaysia which currently houses 2,170 MSC Malaysia-status companies, up 19 percent from 2006.
The revenue generated by MSC Malaysia status companies last year shot up to RM17 billion, an increase of more than 30 percent compared with 2006, said Abdullah, who is the chairman of MSC Malaysia Implementation Council.
These companies have also created about 79,000 jobs.
He said MSC Malaysia would continue to see the inflow of foreign direct investment, which increased by 20 percent
between 2006 and 2007.
“Export figures for 2007 are reported to exceed RM5.5 billion,” said Abdullah in his opening speech at the 20th MSC Malaysia Implementation Council Meeting at the Prime Minister’s office here Thursday.
Also present were his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and MDEC chief executive officer, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali.
The prime minister said Malaysian companies contributed about RM1.4 billion to the export figure, indicating that the local MSC Malaysia companies were competing and winning deals in the global markets.
“We should be proud of MSC Malaysias success thus far. More can and should be done,” he said, adding that a truly global brand should emerge from the MSC homegrown companies.
He said the government would continue to assist the homegrown ICT entrepreneurs going beyond Malaysias shores and competing with global companies.
“We need global icon that students and budding entrepreneurs can look up to emulate.
“Therefore I look forward to discussing the proposal on nurturing local ICT companies that MDEC will be tabling today,” he said.
Abdullah said while MSC Malaysia has successfully built a vibrant ICT industry, the scope of ICT development would have to expand beyond the original boundaries of attracting FDI.
He said the recent World Congress on IT (WCIT 2008) held in Kuala Lumpur, had clearly placed Malaysia on the ICT world map.
“This is the true measure of WICT success, that it managed to change the perception of our ICT capability.
“And now our challenge must to be continue to build on the success achieved during this “Olympics of ICT”,” he said.
